Ordinary people, making an extraordinary difference
Research shows that children who have been assigned a CASA volunteer tend to spend less time within the foster care system than those who do not have an advocate. Judges have observed that children assigned advocates also have better chances of finding permanent homes than children without advocates.
Judges in Bartholomew, Decatur and Jennings counties have implemented the Advocates for Children program in their courts and appoint CASA volunteers to cases of child abuse and neglect. The CASA model is endorsed by the American Bar Association, the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges, and the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention of the U.S. Department of Justice.
In 2010, 150 volunteers with Advocates for Children served 550 children in the tri-county area. In the same year, 227 children's cases were closed, and of those, 95.6% (217 children) were placed with a family as their final pemanent placement.
