Youth Summit 2011

Fri, Sep 16, 2011

I am pleased to invite you to the second Youth Summit. This year all of Region 14 will be invited to attend.  This year’s Summit will focus upon supporting youth in care.  It will be held September 16th at the newly opened Commons in downtown Columbus.

Indiana ranks above the national average for the number of youth in foster or relative care. We will spend the day with a singular focus on the special needs of these youth and how to improve the outcomes for their future.  In addition to an inspiring keynote address, there will be informative educational sessions and a regional youth service provider fair.  We are delighted that a portion of the Heart Gallery exhibit will be on display and attendees will have the opportunity to participate in a state-wide book drive for foster children, through Books for Youth.

The sessions for the day will certainly be relevant to foster parents, CASA volunteers, youth serving agencies, educators, the faith based community, and local government.  However, we extend a special invitation to anyone who has thought about becoming a foster parent or CASA volunteer.  We will have two special sessions to answer questions about those vital needs.

We will offer two options over the lunch hour.  We are offering a box lunch so that you can stay on site over the lunch break in order
to facilitate friendships and informal discussions with colleagues. You may also opt for lunch on your own with a wide array of restaurant options available within walking distance of the Commons.

To register, please submit this form: ATTENDEE_REGISTRATION_FORM_2011.doc by email to Christine.Deaton@dcs.in.gov or fax at (812) 314-2481 by Friday September 9th, 2011 to reserve your place and optional box lunch.  Also, please take a few minutes to indicate which of the concurrent sessions you might be interested in attending during the Summit.  The information will be used solely for the purpose of meeting room assignments.

We are excited about the keynote address by Dr. Jaiya John. Dr. John is the founder of Soul Water Rising, a global human relations mission. Jaiya was born into foster care; has worked nationally with many thousands of foster and adoptive youth, parents and professionals; is a doctor of social psychology and a former Howard University professor; and served as associate director for the National Center on Permanency for African American Children. His message will inspire to transform heart and mind. Dr. John is a published author and will have books and resource publications available for purchasing during a meet and greet time.

I look forward to seeing you in September.
